2018: Lisa Bell Wilson '87: is Senior Editor for Sports at The Undefeated, ESPN’s multi-platform initiative on race, sports and culture. Wilson joined The Undefeated in 2017 after 18.5 years at The Buffalo News. When she was promoted to executive sports editor at The News in April 2011, she became the nation’s only black female sports editor at a major metropolitan daily newspaper.
Wilson started at The News as a copy editor and layout editor in September 1998. She moved up to assistant sports editor in October 2007. She previously worked at the Niagara Gazette in Niagara Falls, N.Y. from 1992-98 as a sports reporter, features editor and sports editor.
Wilson directed The News staff to two Grand Slams (2014 and 2012) as a Top 10 daily, Sunday and special section, as well as a Top 10 website, in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ annual contest. The News earned a Triple Crown (Top 10 in three of the four categories) in 2011, 2013 and 2015. She was elected second vice president of APSE in April 2018, the first black woman to hold office in APSE’s 44-year history. She will ascend to the presidency in 2020.
During her News tenure, she made the Buffalo Business First Power 250 and Power 100 Women lists. She earned a Buffalo Black Achievers in Industry Award in 2015.
Wilson graduated from Canisius College with a B.A. in communication in 1991. She lives in Alexandria, Va. with her 10-year-old daughter, Alissa.
