We are the magnet school for acceleration and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program in the City of Buffalo. We enroll approximately 1100 students in grades 5-12. Our students come from every walk of life in our city and work towards being 'bridge builders' and leaders.
Students are assigned to City Honors by the Buffalo Public Schools Student Placement and Registration Office. In accepting an assignment to City Honors, families agree to participate in course and graduation requirements that go well beyond that of the state of New York including participation in all aspects of the IB Middle Years Program in grades 5-10 and taking at least five IB and AP courses in grades 9-12. All juniors and seniors participate in the IB Diploma Program as Course Candidates and approximately 40%-50% of our grades 11 & 12 students choose to pursue the full IB Diploma by becoming Diploma Candidates.
Another important component of our school is the acclaimed STARS Program which composes more than 12% of our student body and since its inception in 2005 has served as a model for educating students with autism and has been replicated at other sites.
Our school occupies the historic Fosdick-Masten Park school building which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The current building was constructed in 1914 to replace the original Masten Park High School which opened in 1897 and was destroyed by fire in 1912. In 2010, we completed a $40 million construction project funded by the State of New York which lovingly restored the 1914 building and added an annex with new state-of-the art amenities. Today, our 200,000+ square foot facility is a stunning blend of a regal landmark and cutting edge architecture and technology. We are making significant progress in working with our neighbors to restore our full original campus.
Our annual school profile, CHS brochure and other parts of this website provide greater detail about our school.
